چکیده

In 1976, Diffie and Hellman introduced the revolutionary concept of public-key cryptography, also known as asymmetric cryptography. Today, asymmetric cryptography is routinely used to secure the Internet. The most famous and most widely used asymmetric cryptosystem is RSA, invented by Rivest, Shamir and Adleman. Surprisingly, there are very few alternatives known, and most of them are also based on number theory. How secure are those asymmetric cryptosystems? Can we attack them in certain settings? Should we implement RSA the way it was originally described thirty years ago? Those are typical questions that cryptanalysts have tried to answer since the appearance of public-key cryptography. In these notes, we present the main techniques and principles used in public-key cryptanalysis, with a special emphasis on attacks based on lattice basis reduction, and more generally, on algorithmic geometry of numbers. To simplify our exposition, we focus on the two most famous asymmetric cryptosystems: RSA and Elgamal. Cryptanalysis has played a crucial rôle in the way cryptosystems are now implemented, and in the development of modern security notions. Interestingly, it also introduced in cryptology several mathematical objects which have since proved very useful in cryptographic design. This is for instance the case of Euclidean lattices, elliptic curves and pairings.

Cryptanalysis of a Fast Public Key Cryptosystem Presented at SAC '97

At SAC '97, Itoh, Okamoto and Mambo presented a fast public key cryptosystem. After analyzing several attacks including lattice-reduction attacks, they claimed that its security was high, although the cryptosystem had some resemblances with the former knapsack cryp-tosystems, since decryption could be viewed as a multiplicative knapsack problem. In this paper, we show how to recover the private...

Lattice Enumeration Using Extreme Pruning

Lattice enumeration algorithms are the most basic algorithms for solving hard lattice problems such as the shortest vector problem and the closest vector problem, and are often used in public-key cryptanalysis either as standalone algorithms, or as subroutines in lattice reduction algorithms. Here we revisit these fundamental algorithms and show that surprising exponential speedups can be achie...

Merkle-Hellman Revisited: A Cryptanalysis of the Qu-Vanstone Cryptosystem Based on Group Factorizations

Cryptosystems based on the knapsack problem were among the rst public key systems to be invented and for a while were considered quite promising. Basically all knapsack cryptosystems that have been proposed so far have been broken, mainly by means of lattice reduction techniques. However, a few knapsack-like cryptosystems have withstood cryptanalysis, among which the Chor-Rivest scheme 2] even ...

Rounding LLL: Finding Faster Small Roots of Univariate Polynomial Congruences

In a seminal work at EUROCRYPT ’96, Coppersmith showed how to find all small roots of a univariate polynomial congruence in polynomial time: this has found many applications in public-key cryptanalysis and in a few security proofs. However, the running time of the algorithm is a high-degree polynomial, which limits experiments: the bottleneck is an LLL reduction of a high-dimensional matrix wit...

Factoring pq2 with Quadratic Forms: Nice Cryptanalyses

We present a new algorithm based on binary quadratic forms to factor integers of the form N = pq. Its heuristic running time is exponential in the general case, but becomes polynomial when special (arithmetic) hints are available, which is exactly the case for the so-called NICE family of public-key cryptosystems based on quadratic fields introduced in the late 90s. Such cryptosystems come in t...
